Due to the fact that so many flights were cancelled there is now a scarcity of space on flights for mail.

So Christmas mail to other countries can be delayed by up to two weeks.

That's basically to Europe and the Americas, not into Africa where nothing has changed because we use road transport into Africa.

The SA Post Office has been dealing with travel ban headaches due to South Africa's detection of the Covid-19 Omicron variant.

Communications manager Johan Kruger says US-bound airmail will become available again in January.

"To North America, the United States in actual fact, only surface mail is available right now. We have no airmail connections. Items sent earlier will make it before Christmas because they are on flights already.”
