SA needs to do more to support youth – Childline KZN

Childline KZN says despite efforts to support the country's youth, there're still a number of challenges that need to be addressed.

The non-profit's Adeshini Naicker has been outlining challenges ahead of Youth Day on Friday.

"There are several areas where more can be done: education, and youth unemployment rates in South Africa are among the highest globally. We need to create more job opportunities for young people, particularly through supporting our small businesses and promoting skills development."

The country will on Friday commemorate the 47th anniversary of the events in Soweto on the 16th of June 1976 that became known as the Soweto Youth Uprising.

A police crackdown on a peaceful student march against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools led to the deaths of hundreds.

Naicker says education remains crucial to empowering young people.

"We need to ensure equal access to quality education for all youth. The government needs to invest in infrastructure, resources and teacher training to improve the quality of education currently in schools.

"We also need to align education with the needs of the future market in areas such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and sustainable development."
