SA Medical Association to challenge NHI in court

The South African Medical Association has announced its plans to challenge the National Health Insurance Act in court.

SAMA chairperson Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa has described the case as a comprehensive constitutional challenge which will focus on the impact on doctors, patients, and the healthcare system.

 

"We are contesting multiple provisions that will severely prejudice both doctors and patients alike.

 

"One, access to healthcare, administrative barriers, financial visibility, the impact on our public health sector. The long-term sustainability of South Africa's healthcare system.

 

"Our legal action is driven by the real-world implications of the NHI act, particularly the bureaucratic and structural It introduces."

Mzukwa warned private doctors would face unrealistic workload increases while earning less:.

 

“Doctors are already working under immense pressure, and the NHI places even greater strain on healthcare professionals while reducing their ability to provide quality care. 

"Summer's legal challenge is about ensuring a healthcare system that is fair and workable for both patients and medical practitioners.”
