The Dignity Strike SA will see some of our ministers and other South African activists going without food for 24 hours - starting at 6pm today.

Participants including organisations and activists among other people only drink salt water for 24 hours.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have been on a hunger strike for nearly a month - only surviving on salt water.

Director at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Neeshan Balton says Dignity Strike SA is a symbolic protest.

"Their hunger strike is about basic demands for the improvement of living conditions as prisoners in jails of Israel from communication to health to food. There are solidarity actions across the world. The best way to bring home what it is like to go on hunger strike is to encourage many South Africans to do likewise," he said.
