Ish Prahladh from the eThekwini Ratepayers and Residents Association says they hope the initiative helps bring down crime levels.

The municipal council last week accepted a DA-tabled motion to roll out a new whistleblowing platform via WhatsApp.

If adopted, the platform will let residents anonymously report by-law violations and submit tip-offs on issues such as illegal dumpling and illegal occupation.

Prahladh says while the new system will make it easier for communities to file reports, he hopes the process won't be undermined by corrupt individuals.

" You’ve got to have the people that are behind this one hundred per cent that they will carry out the duty and not take bribes. You don't need corrupted officials there. That is never going to work.

“If you got good, decent people who will make it work, then guarantee that it’s going to work."
