Officials say at least 57 people have been confirmed dead after heavy rain and strong winds battered the Eastern Cape this week.

" I'll be going there tomorrow (Friday) to go out and see exactly how our people are suffering there and how we can console the families and how we can come up with consistent measures from a disaster point of view to give real support to people, those who have suffered this loss, and we pay our condolences,” the president said on Friday.

Over 2,000 people have been displaced in the neighbouring province.

Speaking at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, Ramaphosa said the government would consider how to support the Eastern Cape authorities through the devastation.

He adds that there is a pressing need to build capacity to manage disasters more effectively.

" We've witnessed deadly heat waves, heavy rains and fires here in this province, and in the Western Cape as well. We've also witnessed tropical cyclones in other parts of our continent and prolonged drought, particularly in the Free State and in the Eastern Cape."
