Ramaphosa: Shope was a trailblazer for women’s freedom
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
President Cyril Ramaphosa says progress in tackling inequality is thanks to those who led the liberation struggle.

He delivered the eulogy at the late ANC stalwart Gertrude Shope's funeral in Johannesburg yesterday.
The freedom fighter passed away last week at the age of 99.
Ramaphosa says Shope played a pivotal role in the fight for women’s rights under apartheid and paved the way for women's leadership in a democratic South Africa.
" We should remember that she was not only a torch bearer, but she was a trailblazer for women's emancipation. We should remember her for her lifelong contribution to the struggle for freedom for all, but more especially for women.

"The freedom of women silenced in the margins of apartheid, oppression and patriarchy."
Her grandson, Molefe, also reflected on her legacy, remembering her deep commitment to education.
"She was a beautiful woman inside and out. She was about education, very strict disciplinary. If anybody knew her, she would've made sure that you would've gotten your education.
"She would've asked about your education, so she was very strict about that. But at the same time, as strong, as hard as she was, she was still a soft, loving grandmother."
