President Cyril Ramaphosa says allegations made by KZN Police Chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi are receiving the highest attention.

During a media briefing in Durban on Sunday, Mkhwanazi claimed there'd been attempts from senior officials to derail investigations into organised crime syndicates.

He also accused Police minister Senzo Mchunu of having ulterior motives in disbanding the political killings task team in December.

In a statement, Ramaphosa says the claims are of grave national security concern.

He's warned that accusations threaten to undermine public confidence and damage the unity and focus of the police.

Meanwhile, the DA is calling for an immediate investigation.

The party's Ian Cameron says the accusations are very serious and require action.

"I have officially written to the national assembly speaker, Thoko Didiza to ask for an urgent debate in parliament regarding corruption and the broader integrity management crisis in the SAPS."

The ANC’s Mahlengi Bhengu has called the allegations disturbing.

"The ANC is assured that President Cyril Ramaphosa is attending to this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves. We reaffirm our commitment to the principals of accountability, justice and the protection of all South Africans under the law."
