Ramaphosa extends deployment of SANDF to ‘preserve law and order’

President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of 2,828 members of the South African National Defence Force to assist the police.

This is for the prevention and combating of crime, and the maintenance and preservation of law and order during the elections.
President Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says the cost of this employment is estimated at just over R59 million.
“President Ramaphosa has informed the acting Speaker and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces that the employment of the SANDF personnel will form part of Operation Prosper,” said spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.
Magwenya says this move by the president is done accordance with Section 201(2) (a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996, read with Section 19 of the Defence Act of 2002 (Act No.42 of 2002).
