The structure on the M4 near Ballito was damaged by the floods in April last year.

That section of the road has been inaccessible since.

On Friday, the department and SANRAL introduced a contractor who will resume repair and rehabilitation work.

The bridge was damaged during the April floods, leaving that part of the road inaccessible.

KZN Transport spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane says repairing the bridge with a safer long-term structure will also commence concurrently.

"It has taken long to appoint a contractor and we will want to see this project completed within record time. The projection that we have put in is six months, and we are hoping that there won’t be any disruptions; there won’t be any rains, said Ncalane.

Ncalane says the department is hopeful all will go according to plan.

"It is a project that's been awarded at a value of about R54 million. We are hoping to open it up [to] traffic in the next six months."
