The scheme paid out employees whose companies were negatively affected or closed down due to the mass unrest in KZN and Gauteng.
"Since August 2021, the UIF received more than 2 000 WABU applications but approved only 165, after we conducted physical inspections to assess whether the businesses that applied actually existed," says the UIF's Trevor Hattingh.

"We have instructed our follow-the-money auditors to go and access these businesses to ensure that the monies that were paid over to them ended up in the hands of workers.
"To date, we have visited 97 companies to verify that payments ended up in the correct hands."
