Public warned of SAPS WhatsApp scam
Updated | By Bulletin
The South African Police Service is warning the
public about a scam involving fake letters and calls pretending to be from the
police.

It says the messages, circulating via WhatsApp, use real officers' names and logos to demand payments for false criminal cases.
The SAPS stressed that it does not communicate through WhatsApp or video calls.
Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk has asked victims to report incidents and not share personal details or make payments.

"The content of the letters is often tailored according to the victim's location, with changes made to names, addresses, and contact persons to make the communication appear authentic," said Van Wyk
"In certain cases, these WhatsApp messages are preceded by phone calls from individuals posing as police officials."
