Provincial government to intervene in attack of foreign nationals in Chesterville
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The KZN Provincial Government says it will intervene in Durban’s Chesterville area where local business owners have reportedly given foreign shop owners until the end of the week to leave the area.
Local shop owners have reportedly accused their foreign counterparts of selling expired food and not complying with tax laws. The Office of the Premier’s Ndabe Sibiya is calling on the community to exercise restraint.
"The Premier is emphasizing the need to unite as the people of KZN. We know that during the apartheid regime our brothers and sisters in Africa assisted us to launch a fight against the regime," he said.
"Now that we are free we need to ensure that we work with them and make them feel comfortable away from home," Sibiya said.
A wave of xenophobic violence across the country last year - including in KZN - saw many foreign nationals displaced, while others lost their lives.
