Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel says the protesting students have told them they are unhappy about the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NFSAS), which they claim has failed to pay for their accommodation. They are also upset that some students had to be relocated to a different residence in Braamfontein.

NSFAS has however denied that it is at fault .

"The issues are related to accommodation, bus stops, Wi-Fi in the new residences as well as general student services. Campus control is on scene," says Patel.

"The issues are related to accommodation, bus stops, Wi-Fi in the new residences as well as general student services. Campus control is on scene," says Wits spokesperson, Shirona Patel.

She says students will be handing over a memorandum to management of the university.

Police are on standby and private security are also keeping an eye on the situation.

"There are some things that are in our control and thus we will be addressing those issues, but when it comes to accommodation we have limited space," Patel says.

She warns that the accommodation issue is not something that can be addressed at this stage.

"The academic programme is going ahead without any disruption as the protest is contained to the entrance gate on Empire road."
