The 31-year-old was discovered by police on Friday in the Darnall area during a routine patrol.

Mashabane served as inter-departmental relations manager in the Kwadukuza Mayor’s office for six years.

Municipal spokesperson Sifiso Zulu says her death is unfortunate.

"It is unfortunate that such a gentle person [was] rewarded with such brutality, with such cruelty, because everybody who came across her would attest to her professional disposition. Somebody who respected everybody she came across; her passing has sent shock waves throughout the institution."

The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage, and no arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the EFF in the province have called for transparency in the investigation.

Provincial spokesperson Chris Msibi has described Mashabane’s death as a brutal murder.

"We are reiterating the call for the law enforcement agencies to deal with the GBV and also the general crime in KZN. Condolences to the family and everybody who has been affected by this gruesome matter. We are going to assist in every way possible so that all the perpetrators can be brought to book."
