Probe into teen's drowning in Mtubatuba

Preparations for the funeral of a teenage girl who drowned in a swimming pool in Mtubatuba at the weekend after participating in the Provincial Indigenous Games are underway.

Seventeen-year-old Nonkululeko Xaba from Indaka, near Ladysmith died at the hotel where she and her team had been staying.

The Department of Sport and Recreation is assisting the girl's family with the funeral.

The department's Thabo Mofokeng says investigations are underway. 

"Paramedics were called in to try and resuscitate her but to no avail. The department is saddened by this tragedy and we pass our condolences to the family.

"At this stage we don't have the full details of what happened, but according to other participants who were with her they had gone as a group to swim. Police are investigating the circumstances [leading to her death]," he said.
