Probe launched into Jacobs resin factory blaze

KwaZulu-Natal Environmental Affairs says it's brought on board a team comprising wide-ranging expertise to get to the bottom of the Jacobs factory fire.

Emergency teams were dispatched to the resin factory, south of Durban, in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday.
They were back on Balfour Road later in the day, when the blaze flared up again.

Bheki Mbanja, who's with KZN's Department of Environmental Affairs, says a team comprising air quality, pollution and waste management experts, as well as compliance officers, are investigating the cause of the inferno.
He says there are public health and environmental concerns.

"We will seek to establish all the facts around this incident, like what hazardous substances were released into the environment and what was the cause of the fire?"
"This will allow us to give direction on the required remedial action and will inform what enforcement action we institute."
