Probe into Durban police station incidents

KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating three recent incidents at a Durban police station and a court that have left one suspect dead, one in hospital and another on the run.

A 19-year-old man took his own life at the Westville Police Station's holding cells on Saturday. He had been arrested for shoplifting.

At the same police station, a house-breaking suspect escaped from the holding cell.

It is understood 32-year-old Thulani Mchunu made a hole in the ceiling on Sunday shortly after his arrest and made a run for it through the roof.

In the third incident, a man who was due to appear in court this week is recovering in hospital after trying to take his own life while in the holding cells of the Verulam Magistrate's Court.

The police's Thulani Zwane says he was found on time.

"The police came in and they rescued him. He was taken to hospital for treatment under police guard, as he sustained some injuries during his attempt to kill himself by hanging in the cells," he said.
