Pretoria Girls High pupils stand up against hair policy
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Prominent South Africans and organisations have thrown their support pupils of Pretoria Girls High who have taken a stand against what they call racial practices at the institution.
The learners embarked on protest action calling for a change in the school's code of conduct - which allegedly does not allow black learners to wear their hair in its natural form.
The pupils say the school rules bar them from hairstyles such as afros, dreadlocks and braids.
They are also calling for Gauteng's MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi to meet with their head mistress.
An online petition has been established on Amandla.mobi in support of the calls being made by the learners.
Koketso Moeti is the executive director of the online petition site - listen below.
Here's the letter submitted by pupils to the Gauteng MEC.
Dear MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi and Headmistress, Mrs K du Toit,
We the undersigned call on you to take swift action to ensure that:
- The school's code of conduct does not discriminate against Black and Muslim girls;
- Disciplinary action against teachers and other staff members implementing any racist policy and/or racist actions
- Protection for the learners who protested to ensure they will not be victimise

One of the first places racism has to removed is in schools. Children shouldn't have to be fighting this. #stopRacismAtPretoriaGirlsHigh

We've failed them, turned 13yr olds into 'child soldiers' - to fight for freedoms they should be enjoying 😢 #StopRacismAtPretoriaGirlsHigh
