Power restored in most areas following major Durban blackout
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Residents in the Greater Durban area were sent searching for
torches and candles on Tuesday night, when a major blackout struck the city.
eThekwini made a post on its official social media platforms confirming the outage.
The municipality said that a fault at Eskom’s Avon substation saw almost all areas north of the Umgeni River left in the dark.
The lights also went out in areas in Morningside, Overport, parts of Westville and in the Upper Highway – among others.
Most areas had their electricity supply restored within about an hour.
Officials said people whose lights remained off should log the outage as per a normal fault.
To do so, you can call 080-311-1111 or Email [email protected]
Eskom’s Avon substation incurred a fault resulting in a blackout to entire areas north of the Umgeni. Pockets of areas south of the Umgeni: Morningside and Overport are also out. Over a third of Durbans load is down.
