Portuguese fugitive denied bail in KZN

A Portuguese fugitive arrested in KwaZulu-Natal recently has been denied bail in a Verulam court.
João Rendeiro, the former president of an investment bank, fled his home country after he was sentenced to jail for crimes including fraud and money laundering in a multi-million Euro case.
The 69-year-old was arrested in Umhlanga Rocks, earlier this month, after Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KZN spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the Portuguese national's also been charged with computer forgery.
"In denying Rendeiro bail, the Regional Court Magistrate Rajesh Parshotham said that Rendeiro posed a flight risk and that his release on bail would undermine the criminal justice system in particular the bail system."
