Police in Pietermaritzburg are hoping CCTV camera footage they have been given access to will help them identify the killer of a 10-year-old boy who was shot dead on Sunday.

Ayabonga Ngobese was murdered in his Mbali home shortly after returning from Sunday school.

Police say Ayabonga was shot in the chest - allegedly by a man who was seen by neighbours walking home with him.

His mother, Nozipho Ngobese says she and Ayabonga's grandmother last saw the boy while making their way to the main service at their church.

"On his way from church, we met him and gave him the key and we went to the main service."

Ngobese say they returned home later to a gruesome scene.

"We found the gate opened and the front door was closed. We found him lying in his bedroom bleeding and we couldn't believe what had happened. People saw him with this guy but they thought he was a relative. He was my precious little boy - the only child that I had," she said.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson, Mthokozisi Ngobese says the motive for the murder is still unknown - but they are hoping for a breakthrough soon.

"Fortunately one of the neighbours has CCTV cameras, so we are looking at the footage," he said.
