KwaZulu-Natal
police are investigating a case of failure to safeguard a firearm after a
13-year-old south coast boy died after allegedly shooting himself with his grandfather's
gun.
Officers say the boy found the firearm in a metal cabinet in his grandfather's
bedroom in Sea Park, outside Port Shepstone on Wednesday.
SAPS spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says the incident occurred after the boy returned home from school.
“He had come home from school and went to the bedroom where the firearm was kept. He allegedly took it and accidentally shot himself,” she said.
The incident comes just weeks after an 11-year-old Empangeni boy accidentally shot his sister before the turning the gun on himself.
Both siblings died.
Police are urging gun-owners to keep their firearms secured properly and away from children.
