Plans for R4bn jet 'a national disgrace'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Opposition parties have slammed government’s reported plans to invest in a new R4-billion jet for President Jacob Zuma.
Weekend reports suggest Armscor, the defence force’s acquisition agency, is in advanced plans to acquire the aircraft.
It will reportedly be fitted with a private bedroom, bathroom and a conference facility.
The DA’s Shadow Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Kobus Marais says Zuma can’t need such a luxury in such strained financial times.
"It is a clear indication the president has lost touch with the real concerns and the real need on the ground. We will obviously ask questions, we will go to the Joint Standing Committee on Defence next Friday," he said.
COPE’s Dennis Bloem says urge South Africans need to stop Zuma's government in its tracks.
"It is a national disgrace that this government really wants to waste so much money to spend on the president to fly up and down," he said.
Officials confirmed to the City Press newspaper that it has asked Armscor to acquire the jet but said they don't yet know how much it will cost.
