Over 300 undocumented foreign nationals are believed to have been employed at the factory, producing fashion and workwear items.

Police had to use ladders to scale the Genroy Clothing factory’s gates after workers tried to lock the premises.

Once inside, officers began moving the employees out of the building to distinguish South African nationals from undocumented individuals.

Several workers were caught trying to flee.

Inside the factory, officials found rows of sewing machines, fabric, and completed garments.

A large number of female workers were found still at their stations.

Officials from the Department of Home Affairs have begun verifying the identities of the employees, most of whom are believed to be Malawian nationals.

The factory’s owners and managers have been called in for questioning.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli was also at the scene and was briefed on the situation.
