A concerned group is set to descend on the doorstep of the KZN police headquarters on Thursday.

They'll be picketing in solidarity and support of provincial police chief, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who recently made explosive claims of criminal and political interference in the SAPS.

He alleged Minister Senzo Mchunu had ulterior motives when he disbanded the KZN Political Killings Task Team.

Mkhwanazi says the unit uncovered a powerful criminal syndicate with control over the police and judiciary.

ActionSA says its members will be among those protesting in Durban today.

"We support Mkhwanazi in what he is doing, and I think it's a lesson to whistleblowers to say don't sit back, speak out when criminality is happening. To say whatever, we are doing is for this country which is being hijacked by criminals,” says the party’s provincial leader Zwakele Mcwango.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to get to the bottom of the allegations when he returns from Brazil today.

Political analyst Zakhele Ndlovu believes Ramaphosa could redeploy Mchunu, saying the ANC will want to be seen as taking decisive action amid mounting public pressure and outrage.

"A lot of people sympathise with Mkhwanazi. It seems courageous and brave. The ANC does not want to be seen as a party that condones corruption. Within the ANC, he is not going to occupy any senior position."
