Phoenix hospital confirms identity of man's body found in ceiling
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Durban says the body that was found in the ceiling was of one of its patients, who had a mental illness.
Acting Board Chairperson, Ela Gandhi says the man had been reported missing - a few days before his decomposed body was discovered in the ceiling of the Trauma Unit on Friday.
Gandhi says the patient had come to the hospital with a fracture and was sent to the X-ray department.
"When he hadn't returned - they notified the family and the police. A missing person's docket was opened. This was until there was a terrible stench and people were wondering where the stench was coming from. They found blood stains and found that there must be something in the ceiling," Gandhi said.
Gandhi says a post-mortem has since been conducted - and they've been in contact with his family.
"We found that the DNA matched the person that had come in with a fracture. Whether he climbed there or someone put him there - we don't know."
