Phaahla says no clear indication of Covid infection rate
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Health Minister Joe Phaahla believes we are at a stalemate in the fight against Covid-19.
He says data gathered over the past two weeks seems to be confusing - with no clear rise and fall in infections.
Phaahla updated the media on Friday morning on our efforts to curb the spread of the virus, as well as our national vaccination rollout programme.
"In terms of active cases, there has been also a plateau in terms of the rise in infections”, he said.
"Our epidemiologists believe that this plateau and the slowing down in the rate of new infections can be linked to the opening of schools.

"In support of this is also an observation that over the last 14 days we have witnessed more infections amongst the young people of below 20 years of age."
Commenting on the recent changes to the adjusted alert level 1 regulations, the minister said masks mandates in the country will remain.
"I know it is irritant to wear a mask, I think we must be patient because this pandemic is still in our midst."
