The Energy Department has announced a 29c/l increase in the price of petrol.

The price of diesel will rise by 21c a litre. Paraffin will cost 17c more a litre.

The Energy Department says the price increase is due to the international price of brent crude oil.

Energy department spokesperson Robert Maake says: "It's mainly due to the higher crude oil prices. However, we have seen the strengthening of the rand against the US dollar which cushioned the prices by 12c/l."

Efficient Group economist Francois Stofberg says fuel prices should remain steady throughout the year.

"Fuel prices might steadily increase, but the rand might see further strengthening against the US dollar. Throughout this year, petrol prices should remain flattish and we might see the same price level now as we see in January 2018," he says.
