Persons with disabilities inclusion ‘needs urgent attention'
Social Development Deputy Minister Ganief Hendricks said
the inclusion of persons with disabilities must be taken more seriously.
Hendricks spoke in Umhlanga on Tuesday at the handover of a report on a draft policy for the Social Development Services to Persons with Disabilities.
"We must in our service delivery ensure their full participation in society and 40 government departments are supposed to do something for you. So, we need all of government as we move forward," said Hendricks.
The draft policy was approved by Cabinet in 2023.
It aims to introduce measures to enhance the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The report includes inputs from public hearings recently held in several parts of KZN, including Zululand, King Cetshwayo, Ugu, and Ilembe.

Hendricks said barriers to healthcare, employment and education are some of the challenges highlighted in the report that need urgent attention.
He said a collective approach involving various sectors and spheres of government is needed.
"Strengthening policy implementation and accountability. Regular process reviews will be conducted with clear accountability mechanisms.”
"Inclusive employment initiative, public and private sector employment equity targets will be reinforced, alongside vocational training programs. Improved access to services, disability awareness and advocacy, sustainable funding for NPOs,” he added.
