Sparrow is facing charges of crimen injuria after taking to Facebook to describe black beachgoers as 'monkeys' in an apparent reaction to litter being left behind after New Year's celebrations earlier this year.

An excerpt from the post reads:

“These monkeys that are allowed to be released on New Year’s eve and New Year’s day on to public beaches towns etc obviously have no education what so ever so to allow them loose is inviting huge dirt and troubles and discomfort to others."

She has since been found guilty of hate speech by the Equality Court and ordered to pay R150 000 to the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation.

Legal expert, Sunil Singh from Sunil Singh and Associates in Durban, says there's more than enough evidence in the case.

"She has posted this on social media. The investigation should not take very long to wrap up because it's straightforward as that comment could be produced as evidence. I don't see how she is going to defend that," he said.
