PE council meeting permanently adjourned as chaos erupts

A re-scheduled special council meeting aimed at debating the EFF's motion of no confidence in Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Athol Trollip, was permanently adjourned after it once again descended into chaos on Tuesday morning.

Trollip voiced his disgust on social media during the meeting in the Old Wool Exchange building in Port Elizabeth and tweeted that the opposition in the Metro Council is deliberately destructive and can only be described as disgraceful.

He said they refused to allow DA councillor Nqaba Bhanga to pay tribute to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. A number of other political parties did pay tribute to her.

Trollip asked what kind of democracy do we have under this behaviour?

Council Speaker, Jonathan Lawack earlier warned members that they were on national television, and called for them to behave accordingly.

This appeared to have little effect on proceedings and the mood in Council and it was not long thereafter that Lawack permanently adjourned the meeting.
