Parly officials, workers meet over protest

Striking Nehawu workers have been locked in a crisis meeting with Parliament's Secretary, Gengezi Mgidlana since this morning.

The meeting follows three days of protest action by parliamentary support staff.

Yesterday’s strike ended in riot police letting off stun grenades, while Parliament's office bearers secured an interdict to stop striking workers from disrupting committee meetings or sittings of the National Assembly.

Workers will not be paid for the days that they have not been at work as this is illegal strike that is not protected.

Nehawu office bearers, however, are confident that workers will continue at all cost until Parliament gives in to their demand for better bonuses and for the re-vetting of all staff to be stopped.

Parliament says the bonus structures were agreed to and cannot be changed at this stage.

While Nehawu has rejected this as well as the interdict saying it is not taking any notice of it, Cosatu has slammed Parliament for what it is calling heavy-handed, apartheid-style tactics in dealing with the protest.
