Parliament welcomes ruling on political party funding

Parliament has welcomed a court ruling forcing political parties to disclose where their funding comes from.
A judge has given Parliament 18-months to make changes to the Promotion of Access to Information Act.
Non profit group, My Vote Counts brought the matter before the Western Cape High Court.
It argued that South Africans have a right to know whose funding the political parties they vote for.
While, Judge Yasmin Meer acknowledged that transparency about private funding is needed, she said its not up to the courts to decide how this is done but Parliament.
The respondents in the case included president Jacob Zuma, the ANC and all 12 opposition parties.
The DA, the only party to oppose the matter, says its studying the judgement.
Meanwhile, Parliament says its conducting its own ad-hoc committee process to review how political parties are funded into regulate the disclosure of donations.
Public hearings on the draft political party funding bill are set to held on the 7th and 8th of November.
