Pair in Pinetown court for copper cable theft worth R800k

Two suspects accused of stealing copper cables belonging to eThekwini Municipality will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The two were nabbed in Malvern on Monday while travelling in a truck carrying the stolen property.
Authorities say the recovered cables are worth over R800,000.

KZN SAPS Spokesperson Carmen Rhynes says the pair face several charges, including tampering with economic infrastructure.
"Additional charges of receiving stolen property and possessing burnt copper cables were also added.
"Eight hundred and sixty-one kilograms of suspected stolen copper were recovered with a total value of R850,000, 288 kilograms of which belonged to the eThekwini Metro Electricity.
