Public Protector must go: Opposition parties

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) have called on Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane to step down.

"In her recent responding affidavit to the court challenge mainly by the South African Reserve Bank, the PP concedes that she was wrong on her remedial action regarding a constitutional amendment. The PP even offers to pay for legal costs of opposing counsels," the EFF says.

Meanwhile, the DA says Mkhwebane is not fit to hold office.

The DA's Glynnis Breytenbach says Mkhwebane decision not to oppose the application brought by the South African Reserve Bank shows that she's not competent in her role.

"I suppose rather late than never, however she arrived at such an astonishingly incorrect conclusion she is yet to explain," Breytenbach says.

She adds that they are concerned about the fact that Mkhwebane offered to pay all the legal fees.

"She is going to be using taxpayers money and it is easy to litigate with other people's money. The public protector's budget is already strained," Breytenbach says.

Breytenbach says they never thought that Mkhwebane was fit to hold the office of the public protector.

"We opposed her appointment and we were the only party to do so. I see that other parties have now called for a review of this matter.

"It is deeply concerning that she lacks experience."
