Opposition parties to challenge SABC 'take-over'
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Opposition parties are outraged that Communications Minister, Faith Muthambi is trying to take full command of the SABC.
The Broadcasting Amendment Bill was tabled in Parliament on Friday.
If passed into law, the SABC will be controlled by the state as was the case during the apartheid era.
The DA's Phumzile Van Damme says they are going to fight the bill with everything.
"The Bill tabled by Minister of Communications will amongst other amendments remove parliament's role in the appointment of the SABC's non-executive board members.
"The president will now appoint the members on advise of the Minister of Communications and not Parliament. The Bill is quite simply bad for South Africa. It will see the las tof independence removed from the SABC,"she said.
The EFF's Marshall Dlamini has warned if the bill is passed - it will take the country backwards.
"We will wait until the Bill gets into Parliament and then we will oppose it from there. We will look at other avenues if we fail in Parliament. For now, we will wait for it to be put in front of Parliament and then we will oppose it then because we are not agreeing with it," he said.
