Opposition calls for specialised crime units
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
Some opposition parties believe specialised units are necessary if the fight against crime is to be won.
The Democratic Alliance feels anti-gang, anti-drug and rural safety units must work alongside the police.
The DA held a media briefing in Pretoria yesterday, ahead of today's release of the annual crime statistics.
The party's shadow Minister of Police, Dianne Kohler-Barnard believes units working with the police will go a long way in fighting crime, especially in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.
The Congress of the People agrees, saying the focus should shift to communities.
The party's Dennis Bloem says Community Safety Centres must be created urgently.
"Communities are there to assist the police and to assist in fighting crime. When we're have these community safety centres, then we know that area is secure and criminals will know that they must stay away," he said.
The crime statistics are expected to be presented to the Police Portfolio Committee in Parliament from 10am.
