The opposition party, wrote to parliamentary Speaker Baleka Mbete, requesting that the motion be debated before the House.

The reason for the motion was motivated by various events - such as a Constitutional Court ruling stating that the NPA's decision to drop corruption charges against Zuma, was irrational and Zuma's role as stated in Former Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela's State Capture Report

The EFF interrupted DA leader, Mmusi Maimane just as he was to begin the debate.

EFF MP Floyd Shivambu told the House members must be allowed to cast a secret ballot.

Deputy speaker, Lechesa Tsenoli rejected Shivambu's request.

Maimane finally brought his party's motion pleading with parliamentarians to put South Africa first.
