One dead in R56 crash

A woman has been killed in a head-on collision between a car and a bakkie on the R56 in Thornville, Pietermaritzburg, earlier this afternoon.
Emergency services said debris from the collision were spread across the freeway.
According to Netcare911, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the bakkie had to be cut out of his vehicle by firefighters.
He was treated on the scene before being taken to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for urgent attention.
Authorities are currently on the scene investigating the exact cause of the crash.
