Fezile Ngubane was cleared of involvement in Mongale’s case over the weekend.

She was found dead just over a week ago after reportedly going on a date in Johannesburg.

Police released the pictures and identities of three suspects, with claims that they had links to a criminal syndicate romancing and robbing young women.

The prime suspect linked to her murder was killed during a shootout with police in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban, on Friday.

Ngubane handed himself over at KwaMashu Police Station not long after that.

It was found that he was a victim himself, having his Smart ID stolen, and then used to Rica several SIM cards which were used in the robberies.

" I would just like to say to South Africa that anybody who thought I was involved in this should know for a fact that I've never done anything wrong. I've never left home.

"I've always been with my parents, and I've never laid my hand on a woman. I've only got one child in my life. She just finished her metric. I'm not a violent person."

Mongale was laid to rest in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

She held an honours degree in Journalism and was pursuing her Master’s.

A student from Rhodes University says Mongale was one of the voices who stood up against Gender Based Violence.

" It's so painful that this is how she left when, back in the day, during the #RUReferenceList protests against gender-based violence, it was her voice leading us in song.

"It was her voice leading us towards some sort of justice against the horrific experiences that women and girls experience, especially in schools."
