Olorato Mongale: Cops descend on Toti

More information has come through about Friday morning's shootout in Amanzimtoti, where the prime suspect in the Olorato Mongale murder case was shot and killed.

Police received information that Philangenkosi Makhanya had gone to visit a man on Arbour Road, south of Durban, on Thursday to borrow a car.


On Friday morning, police and members of the forensics unit could be seen making their way in and out the flat on the third floor of the complex.


Officers descended on the property in the early hours - after tracking his whereabouts throughout the day.


KZN police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said they believe the suspect made a run for it on Wednesday after police found the vehicle that was allegedly used in 30-year-old Mongale's murder in Johannesburg.

A team of detectives from Gauteng found the VW Polo at a panelbeater's shop in Phoenix, north of Durban.


Mkhwanazi said the suspect was picked up from his home in KwaMashu and made several stops, using different vehicles before ending up at this complex.

He said the person he visited claims Makhanya wanted a vehicle but after the seeing his image on posters on social media, he refused to give him one.


When police arrived, Makhanya he is said to have opened fire, and was shot dead.


Police believe the group belongs to a criminal syndicate targeting women.  


The parents of one of the suspects have been into custody in Durban.
