They say they haven’t ruled out robbery as a motive.
The mother-of-two worked at the Harry Gwala Regional Hospital.
Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, visited Mkhize's family yesterday.
"The family is shocked because this was totally unexpected. You can see that there’s still a sense of disbelief among the family members. They are also hoping the police will get to the bottom of this, and arrest and bring to book the perpetrators of such a dastardly act."
Nzimande says Dr Mkhize’s death is not only devastating for her loved ones but is also a blow for the country. "we don't have many Black female paediatricians in our health system in South Africa. In fact, someone like her: young, bright and the world at her feet, could've been anywhere; she could’ve got a job abroad easily. South African medical practitioners are well-trained specialists and respected worldwide."
Mkhize leaves behind two young children aged two and five.
The family has yet to announce the memorial and funeral service details.
