Ntuzuma taxi driver faces culpable homicide charges

A charge of culpable homicide has been laid against the driver of a minibus-taxi involved in yesterday's fatal accident in Ntuzuma, north of Durban.

Four school children - three boys and a girl - died after a bus and taxi collided yesterday. More than 20 others - mostly children - were hurt.
The Department of Education says the children who lost their lives were aged between 12 and 16, and were pupils at the Isivandanda Technical High School and Isibonelo High School in KwaMashu.

The police's Thembeka Mbhele says investigations are underway.
"A culpable homicide case has been opened for investigation. The driver was also injured and he is in the hospital,"she said.

KZN transport officials have said that a preliminary report indicated the driver refused to adhere to a call to stop at a roadblock - moments before the collision. It's also alleged the vehicle was overloaded.
