That’s according to Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who briefed the media on Thursday.

"Domestic travel to eThekwini is also on the rebound, increasing by 33% and contributing over R17.4 billion in economic value."

Last month alone, major events injected millions into the city.

The Africa Travel Indaba brought in around R570 million, while the Nedbank Cup final generated nearly R100 million.

This week, the Municipality said it expects the upcoming Hollywood Bets Durban July to inject a further R600 million.

Minister Ntshavheni says Durban's also making progress in attracting international travellers.

"International tourist arrivals also rose by 9.8%, bringing in R3.3 billion in the eThekwini area. We are hoping to achieve the same success with the presidential working group on the City of Johannesburg."
