No unrest at KZN prisons over parole: commissioner
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Kwazulu Natal Correctional Services says there have been no reported incidents of violence by inmates at the prisons in the province.
It follows reports of unrest at the Qalakabusha Correctional Centre in Empangeni last night over parole.
But KZN Correctional Services Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele says that's not the case.
"I wish to confirm that the alleged incident did not take place because heads of the centres have been able to attend to the issues and explained to the offenders sentenced to life."
At the weekend, inmates rioted at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria over what they say are delays in the parole applications of prisoners serving life.
Nxele says in KwaZulu-Natal, all affected offenders have been consulted regarding their cases.
"Those who were due for consideration, their profiles have been forwarded to the national office. Those who are due for consideration, processes are afoot to prepare their profile report for submission again [to the] national office," he said.
