Social workers, however, have been roped in to assist. Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane confirms that the 53-year-old woman and the child were both handed over to them on Friday afternoon by members of Reaction Unit South Africa.

"The matter was fully investigated and it appears there is no case for now. The mother of the child was also present and they were all satisfied. The matter was referred to the local social welfare department to handle," he said.

Reactions Unit's Prem Balram says the store owner reached out to him, apparently after the woman tried to sell the child to two of his staff members.
