Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
Police have arrested nine men who allegedly robbed congregants at a mosque in Nkandla, in northern KZN.
The worshippers had gathered for Friday prayers when a large group of men, travelling in multiple vehicles, stormed the mosque.
The victims were robbed of their cash, cell phones and other valuables.
KZN police spokesperson Jay Naicker says suspects were caught in different locations.
"Police at Nkandla were notified and immediately mobilised all available police officers and other law enforcement agencies. With the assistance of the community, police were able to locate a sedan and mini-bus taxi that was used to flee the scene. Both vehicles were intercepted in different locations and nine men aged between 24 and 33-years-old were arrested.”
Naicker says the men are expected to appear in court soon.
"Police officers seized three 9mm pistols as well as some of the stolen cellphones and cash. Investigations are ongoing and detectives expect to make more arrests soon. The arrested men have been detained pending their imminent court appearance."
