Newlands East crash victims to be laid to rest

The three children who were killed when a minibus taxi ploughed into them in Newlands East, north of Durban will be laid to rest this weekend.

Tina Ngiba and Luyanda Ngubane - both aged 13 - and 14-year-old Ayanda Mtshali were on their way to school when they were hit  by the vehicle last week.  

The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department's Enoch Nzama visited the the girls' families yesterday.

He said the department will assist them with funeral arrangements.

A memorial service will be held today.

"There is a memorial service at the school. On Saturday, there will be a joint funeral for the two KwaMashu families. The other family will hold a funeral service in Empangeni," Nzama said.

Meanwhile the driver of the taxi, Siboniso Zwane has been charged with three counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving. 

He is set to apply for bail this week.
