Newborn baby rescued from a pit in Pietermaritzburg

Community members in Pietermaritzburg have been hailed heroes after they rescued a newborn baby from a pit in Plessislaer.

Residents, who heard a baby crying, alerted emergency services personnel on Sunday morning.

ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huysteen says the Search and Rescue team were led on a footpath by the community to where they heard the infant crying.


"Paramedics met the team on the path where they found them carrying the baby boy. Paramedics assessed the baby and found that he was suffering from mild hypothermia. He was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital for further medical care."


Circumstances surrounding his abandonment are not known at this stage.
